She steps onto the stage

The audience holds their breath

Waiting to see the great performance

Burdensome silence

Tangible darkness

Envelop her

She opens her mouth

But nothing comes out

“Say something!” they demand parsimoniously

“What is it you want me to say?”

She asks weakly

“What would you like to see?”

She whimpers

“What can I do for you?”

She cries softly

Her eyes close

She shuts them out

Welcoming in

The resplendent silence

 She opens her mouth

A quavering melody

Manifests into

Her own song
