Listen

¿Mi corazón se ha dormido?
Colmenares de mis sueños,
¿Ya no labráis? ¿Está seca
La noria del pensamiento,
Los canguilones vacíos
Girando, de sombra llenos?

No, mi corazón no duerme.
Está despierto, despierto.
Ni duerme, ni sueña, mira,
Los claros ojos abiertos,
Señas lejanas y escucha
A orillas del gran silencio.

Has my heart gone to sleep?
Have the beehives of my dreams
stopped working, the waterwheel
of the mind run dry,
scoops turning empty,
only shadow inside?

No, my heart is not asleep.
It is awake, wide awake.
Not asleep, not dreaming—
its eyes are opened wide
watching distant signals, listening
on the rim of vast silence.

-Antonio Machado

Over the weekend we visited San Antonio and my favorite place there is the South Town/King Williams district with all of the beautiful old houses and peaceful, tree-lined streets.  There is a little shop I enjoy visiting when we go there (which is once a year or so).  The owner there is always very kind and keeps all sorts of santos, trinkets and vintage finds in the shop. I like to support local businesses wherever I go, even if it is in a small way.

As I mentioned in a previous post, “what does pain do to a person?  It can make them more keenly aware of other people’s pain”.  And when I walked in to see the owner again, I could see something in her eyes that wasn’t there before.  I opened the conversation and learned about some struggles in her life recently.  It was good to speak with her and exchange stories.

Intuition is something that everybody has and can develop, but many of us are too busy to stop and listen to the signs all around us.  Take time to hear without words and see without looking.
