Art and Poetry by Carmen H Gray

The clouds opened up in October

Fay beings in my garden

All of the old souls summoned from the cold, misty northlands

Landing hither and thither

On that one flower that overshadows me

It grew from seed, you never know what will happen

When you send seeds forth

Into their future states of being

One might become

The one that surpasses you

To stand in that hushed intermission

Of fluttering souls

All Soul’s ShadowSelves

On a steady path south

To a mountain where I have lingered in this lifetime

Four Petals of Gratitude

by Carmen H Gray

Two pair of delicate edges

Symmetrically aligned in globe clusters

Every production of nature

Holds its tiny geometry

Four here and four there

You make heads turn

With your sky colors where

Eyes are lucky to behold you

Meanwhile, your gallant green companions

Stand back to give you more applause

As you coyly acknowledge the world

“When we were children, we used to think that when we were grown-up we would no longer be vulnerable. But to grow up is to accept vulnerability… To be alive is to be vulnerable.”-Madeleine L’Engle

Carmen H Gray

the best part

of seeing you

is the familiar parts

of your face

forever etched in my mind

how your upper lip protrudes

ever so slightly

just like in pictures of you

in utero

when I felt soft flutters of life

only now the quavering

appears to reside

in my radiant heart

Swan Song To My Old Self

Swan Song To My Old Self

by Carmen H Gray

Silenced, I

Tried to keep up

But could not fly

Named and defined

By the periphery

Left me lost and blind

You led me to see

Glimpses of

A new reality

In the still water

Where I saw

My son and daughter

And all of the faces

Extensions of me

And all of the places

I would find

A song issuing forth

Leaving my old self behind

“Un-winged and naked, sorrow surrenders its crown to a throne called grace.”
― Aberjhani

by Carmen H Gray

Sorrow said to me

Hold me

Keep me

In your heart

For just a little while

So I kept it

Hidden and safe

And bestowed it

With gifts

Of time

And in the meanwhile

You said to me

Tell me your heart

Show me your pain

Teach me your song

Of exile

You did not wish

To change it

You just beheld me

The way I was

Unfolding like

A lily of the nile

Flower of love

Blossoms opening

Blue beauty

Transforming gracefully

Sorrow surrendered

Pain reconciled

Full of Grace

“Let everything happen to you
Beauty and terror
Just keep going
No feeling is final”-Rainer Maria Rilke

Full of Grace

by Carmen H Gray

In your darkest hours

I have whispered in my mind

The words of a prayer from my childhood

Vestiges that stayed with me

From that patriarchal system

Because She is the Absolute Nurturer

 The Mother Energy with whom

My heart beats

Because I could not

Physically wrap my arms around your beauty

Nor keep the demons at bay

Nor take your anguish away

“I do not understand the mystery of grace — only that it meets us where we are and does not leave us where it found us.”-Anne Lamott

What have I found?

What have I lost?

The stars stretch into the web of the dark sky

Their dying lights meeting my eyes

In a different time

In a different place

To be found

And lost

And found
