Wedding Vows To You

  Wedding Vows To You

by Carmen H Gray

As our oldest said, “Ya’ll are just less crazy together than you are apart.” And although the stars tell us our signs are a difficult pairing, they also say that with empathy we can help each other grow. That seems absolutely spot on. Besides, I seem to like challenges.

Jason, I only saw what light you brought

Even in an afterthought

Even after the storms have passed

And sunlight shines its golden cast

I still see possibility in my line of sight

Sometimes I slip them off

Those rose-colored glasses that you tossed

But if life is the way you think it is,

It’s all for nought

We are absurd

Are we succored, our thoughts?

By the gentle palette?

For we can paint our world any way we want

Jason, I chose to defy the stars and the naysayers. I choose to be by your side and I’ll lend you my glasses when you need them to experience all the joy, while you can lend me your unobscured views of raw, real life when I need it, too. And I knew way back when it was meant to be. And I know it now. You are my best friend and the love of my life.

Absurdity, Joy, Lucidity

“Basically, at the very bottom of life, which seduces us all, there is only absurdity, and more absurdity. And maybe that’s what gives us our joy for living, because the only thing that can defeat absurdity is lucidity”

-Albert Camus

One fall evening a couple of years ago, my daughter was stressed out about her homework in the beginning of her middle school years.  I told her it was time to put it away, throw on some costumes and forget about it.  Life is full of ridiculous absurdities.  I wanted her to see there were options for reflecting the absurdity back in life’s face, look down at it from above it all.
